Key dates for Year End accounts
. If you have a limited company, you must submit your Year End accounts to Companies House 21 months after your initial registration. Subsequent accounts then need to be submitted within nine months of the end of your business’s financial year.
If you’re self-employed or in a partnership, your Year End accounts are your self-assessment tax return and are submitted to HMRC each year by 31st January. Your tax obligation has to be settled by then with HMRC as well.
It’s worth noting, though, that from April 2026 – when the government switches to the Making Tax Digital Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) system – everyone who is self-employed or landlords with an annual income of more than £50k will be mandated to submit a tax return five times a year under MTD ITSA. Those with income between £30K and £50K will be mandated from April 2027. HMRC will review the needs of smaller business, those under £30K, before taking any decision on further mandation of MTD ITSA.
